Labia Reduction (Labiaplasty)
Labia Reduction or labiaplasty is done to reduce the size of the inner vaginal lips, also called the labia minora.
Why is it done?
In most cases women have labia reduction surgery for cosmetic reasons. If the inner lips are longer than the outer lips, women desire a more elegant, feminine look of their genital lips. Labia reduction surgery can be done in combination with vaginal rejuvenation. Sometimes it is just called that, because it will give the genitals a more youthful and aesthetic look.
Other times women choose having labia reduction surgery for medical reasons. If the labia flaps are too long they can get sucked inwards during sexual intercourse, casing pain and small tears.
Another reason for labiaplasty can be that the patient suffers pain or discomfort when exercising, riding bicycle or sometimes even when just sitting for longer periods of time.
Sometimes women are born with larger labia minora, but often they are caused by child birth and aging. For that reason we do recommend having labia reduction surgery only after you gave natural birth to your last child.

Labia reduction surgery can be done under local or general anesthesia. Please talk to your surgeon about your preferences and the desired outcome of the operation.
During surgery, unwanted tissue will be removed and your surgeon will form an aesthetic and natural looking labia. To do so, parts of the inner lips will be shortened.
This can be done as an outpatient procedure.

Before Labia Reduction surgery
In order to avoid complications the surgeon needs to know about any and all medications that you are taking. That also includes supplements.
Some medications can cause complications and excess bleeding during surgery. Please inform us if your taking Brufen or Aspirin. You must stop taking those medications minimum two weeks prior labia reduction surgery.
Smoking can affect your reaction to the anesthetic and slow down the healing process. You should stop smoking minimum two weeks before labia reduction surgery.
Please inform your surgeon if you have hypertension (high blood pressure).
After Labia Reduction Surgery
After labia reduction surgery you will feel discomfort and be sensitive in the surgical area. Any stitches will resolve on its own. Please wear a pantyliner for about 2 weeks. You will be given detailed instructions on how to keep the area clean in order to avoid infections.
Sexual intercourse, strenous exercise and any activity that raises your blood pressure must be avoided for about 3 weeks.
Risks and Complications
Infection is the main risk. That is why you must keep the area clean and take your prescribed antibiotics. Loss of sensitivity is very rare, but it should be mentioned here as a risk.
